After Jak completes desert training, drive to the flood light near the rock outcrops.

As Jak approaches, Keliver announces the start of the race. This race is 3 laps around a preset circuit outlined by small rocks. The circuit goes over bridges, across big jumps, through a set of cave tunnels, and through a large marsh area. Jak has to race against 4 other sand vehicles that all drive fairly fast. The KEY IS TO GET OUT FRONT RIGHT FROM THE START. If you drive to the right and avoid the jam-up right at the start-line, you can be in 2nd place crossing the first bridge. |
Along the way at certain points, there are turbo-boost stars. Drive over the star or jump in the air and make contact with a star to get the boost. Desert vehicles can store up to 3 turbo cartridges. The turbo and damage indicator is in the lower right corner of the screen. Use [R2] to engage the turbo-boost. It will last for 2-3 seconds but speeds you up considerably. You will need to use the turbo at least once every lap to stay ahead of the pack and win the race. |
To win the race, Jak needs to be in 1st place by the end of Lap 3. Should you fail the first time, don't worry. You can race as many times as you need to. No time limit. After a few practice runs around the circuit, you'll become very familiar with where the turbo stars are and how to time your jump to get the stars in mid-air. DON'T OVERSTEER! Avoid the wet areas of the marsh and don't use turbo near a dune, in case you go airborne at a bad angle and crash, losing time. |
After Jak wins the race, Kleiver breaks-in from a remote monitor and says you can keep the Sand Puppy dune buggy for now. You've earned it! Keliver says to meet him back in the garage compound for another job. A new "tire" icon shows up on the proximity radar. As you drive, WATCH-OUT FOR RENEGADE BUGGIES. These are driven by Marauders and THEY HAVE GUNS! Dodge their gun fire and the vehicles themselves. They will try to run you over or block your way. |
RADAR HINT: Marauder vehicles will show up on the proximity radar as small red circles. If you see a circle coming into the screen, it will give the advantage to avoid contact with them rather than be ambushed as you come over a dune.
